Chapter 8: Bad To The Bone

The announcement droned through the pub like an unwanted guest, its metallic voice grinding out each word with authority:

"A reminder to all citizens: Inspect your neighbor’s faces closely…"

Corvo jerked awake before the message could finish, breath catching as the last remnants of the Void dissolved from his senses. For a moment he didn’t move. The attic felt unnervingly still, the lantern on his table burned low, and a thin line of bluish morning light leaked through the filthy windowpanes.

He pushed himself upright, muscles stiff, and instinctively looked down at his left hand. The mark was there—black now, but unmistakable. Sharp lines, a branching shape like a claw or an eye burned into the skin. He turned his wrist slowly, watching the skin pull and shift around the symbol. Confusion tightened his brow. A trace of fear. And beneath it, a strange, silent expectation—as though the mark itself was waiting on him.

He exhaled through his nose and finally looked around the room—and froze.

The attic was no longer empty.

Across the room, scattered like offerings at some forgotten shrine, stood small golden statues. Rat, whale, Fish and a Wolfhound—each carved beautifully, their metal polished to a soft glow despite the dusty air. Beside each of them, resting on the floor, crates and shelves, laid the bone charms. Pieces of whale bone polished smooth, etched with spiraling runes that crawled over their surfaces like living things. Thin black smoke curled lazily from them, disappearing before it ever touched the air.

The moment he noticed them, something else stirred.

A heartbeat. Not his.

Thum… thum… thum…

The Heart pulsed inside his coat, answering the presence of the charms. Corvo didn’t need to reach for it to feel its pull. The bone charms sang—a strange, distant hum that pricked at his senses, the melody not quite sound but not quite thought either. They whispered with a beckoning tone, an invitation wrapped in something older and colder.

Corvo stood amid the statues and the bones, the mark still faintly warm on his hand, and listened to the eerie chorus calling to him from the shadows of his own room.
